JeyMona is a 67-year-old artist, psychologist and activist. She is the daughter of an Englishwoman and an Uruguayan. She has lived in France for thirty years. She has always been committed to social causes and anti-establishment protests, for which she has been imprisoned eight times. At the age of 63, she entered a Catholic church in Italy completely naked, carrying a flaming torch and attempted to set fire to the altar, outraged by a new case of cover-up of paedophile priests. In her small house she lives with six cats, a dog and a parrot. She loves coffee, wine and carrot cake. Artistically she is known for her paintings in which she manages to combine satire, violence and darkness with tenderness and beauty. In all these years she has experimented with different styles but always with high contrasts and hard brushstrokes. She has created pieces ranging from the most minimalist to those loaded with infinite forms and details. Critics say that her work is endowed with multiple interpretative layers and loquacious concepts, but she has often said things like “I deeply detest intellectual pretensions” and “when I paint I only seek orgasm or to spit in the face of any oppressor, which is sometimes the same thing”. She has recently stated that over half of her work has been done with the help of Ernesto, the chimpanzee she takes care of and who lives in an ecological reserve in the south of France.
